“The ship is located here,” growled General Mead, dressed in his usual pristine white uniform as he pointed to a pin marker stuck in a fittingly stark relief map of the wraith plains. “We are to go to the ship and secure it. There may even be some rebels if intelligence proves to be correct but that doesn’t mean shoot anyone you see. Our own survey team are the ones that sent us the coordinates and they are still taking refuge near to the ship. I know some of the people on that team so if you shoot them by accident you’ll have me to answer to.”

A murmur of muffled laugher echoed around the room, men wearing the whites of drop carrier officers and varying pieces of body armour filled the room. A friendly smile crept across Mead’s face before turning serious and hard as granite.

“On the less cheerful side though boys, this was the last attack that the rebels threw at our great city, they wanted this ship and its cargo out of play and they sacrificed a high ranking sleeper cell to do it. You will get to it before the rebels find out where it is and you will keep it secure until we are told we no longer need to, are we clear?” he added, casting his proud gaze across the soldiers in the room as they collectively answered with a booming ‘Yes sir!’

“You will do me proud, go get em and dismissed!” the general rumbled with a casual salute before turning around to look again at the relief map.

Hal stood up with the rest of room and joined the gaggle filing out through the room’s only door but stopped after casting a casual glance back towards the general. He paused for a moment then left the queue and walked slowly over to the man, standing at ease behind the leader of the largest military force in the Citadel, he let out a gentle cough before speaking.

“Any final advice for me, General?” he asked, cursing himself for not thinking of something better to say. Mead turned around with a start, as if he hadn’t even noticed that the room had emptied behind him.

“Lieutenant Bell? Only the usual, bring your men back and lead from the front – always lead from the front son. It’s the only way these people will respect you – this is your first live combat mission?” The man replied as he turned and rested his weight on the desk behind him - though for a man pushing sixty he had barely any excess weight on him – his personal exercise regime was legendary.

“Yessir, I’ve always missed out on the missions to root out Moonies, even though I passed out of officer training school over a year ago now.”

“Stand easy, Lieutenant,” the keen eyed veteran said as if he only just noticed the lieutenant was standing stiff as a board. “And don’t feel unlucky about not fighting any Moon-struck, they are rarely pretty fights and the things those people can do.
